The Chögyam Trungpa Institute of Nova Scotia seeks to advance the education and understanding of those interested in the Buddhist religion, philosophy, and specifically the work of Chögyam Trungpa, an important 20th century figure in the development of the Buddhist religion, philosophy, and contemplative practice in the West.

 Born in Tibet, Chögyam Trungpa travelled to India, was educated at Oxford University in England, and then moved to North America. There, he created more than 100 contemplative educational centers and founded the first Buddhist-inspired university, Naropa University.

 Author of more than 50 books on Buddhism, meditation, poetry, and art, Chögyam Trungpa died in April of 1987 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, having established a vibrant community of several thousand Buddhist practitioners throughout Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada.

The teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche spoke to Western minds and hearts in a way never before heard – creative, fresh and challenging at the same time. His teaching and activity are a major part of the history of Buddhism’s arrival in the West.
